It's A Small World After All

I went to my cousin's house to celebrate her birthday.  There was a new face in the crowd.  She was hanging out with my cousin's husband, Primito, and would not leave his side.  I introduced myself and Primito tells me "she's my sister."  I replied "but I've never met her."  He said "we just met."

Primito does not know much of his family history.  At every party, Primito and my cousin have, all of our family is always around.  Primito's immediate family comes once in a blue moon.  The matriarch of our family, we call her Fat Grandma, is in a hospice withering away.  She is the last of the elders.  My Prima and La Familia were talking about La Familia.  Primito's son turned to him to ask him about his Familia.  Primito had no answers.  Unbeknownst to anyone he began a search on ancestory.com to give  his son answers.  He came up empty handed, frustrated, discouraged, and wanted to quit.  Primita just happened to be watching a program on television where celebrities did DNA to find their ancestors.  On ancestry.com there is an option for a DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid, a nucleic acid that contains genetic information) test.  For $99 you get a DNA kit.  You send in your spit and you get results in 2-4 weeks.  Six weeks later he got his results.

Somewhere in New Jersey there is a young lady who never met her grandfather.  She wants to find out about her grandfather.  The young lady's husband decided to do a search on ancestry.com.  He buys the kit, sends in her spit, gets results 2-4 or 6 weeks later.

Primito wrote to the first 3 people on the list.  The 3rd person began to ask questions.  He asked if Primito knew of an older sister.  Primito, his mother, and his siblings were the only ones to know there was an older sister.

The husband tells his wife and mother-in-law about the results and an email he received.

Fifty three years ago a baby girl was born in Puerto Rico.  The baby's mother takes the child to Puerto Rico to be raised by her mother, the child's grandmother.  The father of the child tried to keep in contact but the mother made a decision not to have anything to do with the father.

Primito knew he found his sister.  He got excited.  His sister from the same father.  He knew she existed but did not know anything about her.  The son-in-law and Primito wrote back and forth.  The son-in-law wrote he would ask if she wanted to get in touch.  Primito did not hear for a week.  He figured the answer was no.  His story was "she doesn't want to know about us."  Then she called.  He was in shock.  He saved the voice mail.  Primito told Primita.  Primita said "well call her back." He did.

They met, alone at first.  Primito took her to meet her other 2 brothers and 2 sisters.

Trying to find his roots he gets a sister, a niece, and a nephew.  Trying to find her grandfather she finds 3 uncles, 2 aunts, cousins, and a brother for her mother.

When they told me this story the flood gates opened for all of us.  There in the middle of my Primita's birthday celebration we cried like babies.  A joyful cry to welcome new members to La Familia.

As if that was not enough, Primito went to school, and they were in the same class, with his sister's brother.  What a small world and what a wonderful world.  Life is grand.  Live every second of everyday.  Smile.  Enjoy EVERY moment.

Share with us your fabulous moment/s.  We want to hear it.  This is what AlwaysAmigas is ALL about.  The stories that mold and shape our vidas.

With my heart full of joy and smiles,

  1. A very touching story...my fabulous moment came to me this past Saturday when my youngest daughter, told me "Mommy, don't you know? You're my hero, I aspire to be just like you and when I disappoint you I disappoint myself. I want to be just like you when I grow up because you're amazing"
